SVAFNIR - Aufbruch

Svafnir is the solo project of Alexander Suplie, played almost entirely on clean guitar, with a style that is hard to pigeonhole in a genre. However, for classification’s sake, I’ll call it folk/pagan metal, to keep everyone happy. While they do not excel in riffs and harmonies like Opeth or other guitar masters of the genre, the album has a quality that draws you in, the bleak yet relaxed atmosphere, full of sadness and an oppressive feel which, contrary to what you’d expect, help you cross the bottomless gap. I cannot express very well the rather bizarre feelings that Aufbruch transmits. It's probably best that you give it a chance and listen to it, it’s worth it.
Without any claims of instrumental greatness, the album contains 7 songs, of which 2 are less than 2-minute long and the longest is 5 minutes, so it is rather short, unlike other albums in the same genre that tend to get boring with seemingly interminable songs that recycle the same ideas. In the 20 minutes of this album, Alexander and Simon Graff (guest vocals on Nothing Left and Death Of The Sun) manage to bring the listener to another universe, which is no mean feat.
