While on Diamonds (2010) the band was continuing what they had started on Into the Night (2008), with Death by Fire, Enforcer brings things to a whole new level. The evolution is clearly visible. The band sounds more compact and direct. Don’t worry and don’t get excited, the Swedes have not changed their style. They are not Ghost and neither are they Abba. Enforcer plays the same heavy/speed metal heavily influenced by Accept / Judas Priest with a pinch of Motley Crue, but with a much more personal approach. With this record, Enforcer has started to sound like Enforcer. I could say that the young Swedish band is the most important exhibit of the New Wave of Traditional Metal scene in 2013. Bands like Holy Grail, Skeletonwitch or even 3 Inches of Blood can only hope to ever release an album that is as good as this one. I’m not saying that Enforcer is some innovator in heavy metal, I’m just saying that what they give us sounds really damn good, if sometimes predictable.
The intro Bells of Hades first made me think of a morbid version of Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells (1973). Even though this is not the band’s specialty, it would have been interest if Enforcer had more such moments on Death by Fire. After the brief intro, we go straight to business with Death Rides this Night. Melodic heavy/speed metal that leaves you no time to catch your breath. The second song on the record (or the third if we count the intro) is Run for Your Life. If you’re not already running, this is the time! Enforcer are ready to teach a heavy metal lesson. And after we ran from the ghosts of the night, they let us know that things are not quite settled yet and keep going with songs like Mesmerized by Fire, Take Me Out of This Nightmare (hit song!) and Crystal Suite (Trust me, it sounds like Death meets Iron Maiden! You find the parts.) and their heavy metal lesson. You’ll probably say that what Enforcer does is not that original and you’ve heard these things before in one form or another. Yes, ant it is normal. We’re not talking about the saviours of metal (that’s Darkthrone! ), just a band that’s really good sounding!
If you like traditional metal, this record will probably make your top list of albums released this year. Death by Fire is the type of record that should make many bands that call themselves heavy metal drop their false metal and get into pop-rock.
