The release of this record confirms to everyone that White Walls’ success during their three years of activity was not at all accidental, confirmed by the fifth place they took in the world finals of the Global Battle of the Bands in February 2011. While they did not have any strong backing by an agency, the band quickly managed to establish itself in the Romanian metal scene, relying exclusively on fan support, charmed by their live appearances and their superb debut Mad Man Circus (2010).
This time the recordings did not take place in the rehearsal room, as it happened for the previous album, but in three professional studios in Romania (Next Dog, Luna Recording and NoCity). At the console we had the same Marius Costache – who handled tracking and mixing, while mastering belonged to Alan Douches (Killswitch Engage, Mastodon, Sepultura, etc.). So it is easy to understand that this record has up-to-date production, as is the music the four guys from Constanta give us. And since we got to this point, the music on Escape Artist is indeed very modern: progressive metal with a lot of elements from different genres, such as post, jazz, hardcore, dirty (giving you the impression that the bass and guitar are not tuned properly)... all, in one word, FABULOUS. Certainly, White Walls are influenced by a lot of bands, but what’s importance is the one can’t feel the decisive influence of any band from international metal. This is why I can state with no remorse that their music can be a source of inspiration anytime for many other bands who believe in evolution, regardless of where they come from.
Songs are not very similar to each other, and this is one thing I respect a lot, because it makes the album. If someone were to force me to choose the three strongest song, after much deliberation I would end up with Another Sun, Loose Ends and World Gone Wrong. Still, I have noticed that so far the most appreciated ones are Dream Chaser and Patience. Anyway, I can’t hide that I like all songs on this record, because there is absolutely no filler. And, even better, at times you get the impression that they are just throw away too many notes, and you end up wondering “what do they have left for their next album?”.
Finally, I would like to add that any review appearing here, to any album, show or anything else, is exclusively the reviewer’s own opinion, because everyone who writes has their own perception of music and life in general. However, when I say that White Walls is the best band in Romania, and also one of the coolest in the world, this is no longer personal opinion but universal truth and must be treated as such. Of course, far be it from me to underestimate Romanian metal, because, as I have seen (and heard), we have quite a few exceptional bands, many of which I enjoy a lot, and some, well, a bit less. Still, the existence of White Walls between these borders is welcome for absolutely everyone, because it is a positive example for our entire underground movement. All I want from these boys is that they never change... and by this I mean in particular the modesty the showed whenever it was the case, especially when faced with critique.
