Another genre-defining album: doom metal. Saint Vitus is a doom metal band from Los Angeles, California. In fact, it is rather insulting to call them just “a band”, because Saint Vitus was one of the first bands of doom metal and from where I stand, the most original students of the first heavy metal bands in the world, such as Black Sabbath, Blue Cheer or Hawkwind: they managed to build a career (and in the process invent a style) from Black Sabbath songs such as Into the Void, Lord of this World, Black Sabbath and Cornucopia.
Saint Vitus is held by both common fans and hardcore VIP fans (such as Phil Anselmo of Pantera and Down or Henry Rollins of Black Flag and Rollins Band) as the first true doom metal band. They can even say that this album has significantly contributed to the creation of the sludge and drone sub-genres. Scott Reagers’ voice is too often underrated, a perfect and unique voice for this kind of music, a voice that would make a zombie feel threatened. Of the 5 songs (recorded in just 13 hours) that make up the track list, all have remained anthems of doom metal, and were initially created in 1976 and recorded as a demo in 1977. Dave Chandler’s guitar sound spawned many imitations in the coming years (from bands such as Black Flag, Dinosaur Jr., Melvins). The bass and the drums sound as coming from a Flintstonian cave, and the 7-8 chords that were used in the songs are perfectly structured for devotees of slow, heavy and kvlt music and horror/B movie fans.
Its low-budget and simple cover, (released by the SST label owned by Black Flag), I think that it represents the album wonderfully. Only blackness... and a grey logo, immediately bringing attention to lyrics such as: I’m a zombie, my skin is now peeling awaaaaay I’m a zombie, my insides have diiiieeed and turned grey! So, if you weren’t convinced about what doom metal meant after hearing the first Black Sabbath albums, you’re sure to be 100% clear after listening to this one.
