Seen as a milestone of death-doom, Serenades is a superb journey in a universe ruled by sadness and melancholy. Recorded in the Academy studio in June and September 1992, the record was an innovation for the time and, together with the albums of My Dying Bride and Paradise Lost, provided a new perspective in extreme metal. The common ground of all the tracks on this record is the depressive state created by a brilliant combination of heavy guitars, slow drumming and rough voice. The very first song, Lovelorn Rhapsody brings you quickly into this melancholic world and reminds you that not all is well in this world, not only with its lyrics, but with the atmosphere it creates, so heavy you can hardly think of anything else. A particular mention for the two high points of the album: Sweet Tears and Sleepless. Sweet Tears is remarkable with its excellent guitar parts, inducing a deep state of sadness and pointlessness. By far the best Anathema song from their first period, Sleepless is a true doom masterpiece that words cannot describe. Also sensational is J'ai Fait Une Promesse consisting exclusively of acoustic sequences overlaid perfectly with one of the most fragile and innocent female voices I’ve ever heard in a metal band. The only flaw I can find for this song is that it ends too soon: just 2 minutes and 40 seconds. Anyway, listening to this album won’t give you the impression that some songs are only there as filler; they complete each other perfectly, and the album feels beautifully compact. Lyrics are equally impressive and a good match for the depressive music. An interesting fact is that Anathema chose a radically different direction on their next records, a further argument for the idea that Serenades has its own unique place in the elite of classic rock products.

"...iti reaminteste ca nu chiar totul este bine pe aceasta lume, nu numai datorita faptului ca versurile se refera la acest subiect, dar atmosfera creata este atat de apasatoare incat cu greu te poti gandi la altceva." :))) So fucking deep, man!!! ;)
