There is lately a certain current of opinion against bands that play symphonic metal with a female voice, with every attempt of this kind being automatically stigmatized as a Nightwish clone. Epica is one of these bands, trying to create their own identity and avoid being labeled as imitators of the famous Finns. Fortunately, the quality of their releases is a great help in this, and The Divine Conspiracy is no exception. In fact, this album takes the orchestral arrangements and oriental influences from The Phantom Agony and combines them with the aggression and heavy sound of Consign To Oblivion, giving the best product so far in the band's career. Also superlative is Simone Simons’ singing, whose voice has significantly grown in power and expression. The growling vocals are more important than before, insinuating themselves on practically every song. The death vocals and the fact that the man behind the drums was one of the most talented Dutch drummers, Ariën van Weesenbeek (God Dethroned) contributed decisively to the dynamics of the songs, giving a perfect balance between the melodic, epic side and the aggressive side. Thus, we have a very pleasant hour of music, catchy but also complex enough to avoid the clichés of the genre with subtlety.
