THEM FREQUENCIES - The Great Wave-off

The new wave of Bulgarian bands is getting more and more prolific, and is very well known on our side of the Danube. Last Hope, Mindfold Express, Last Remains, Wartime or Them Frequencies are just a few of the names that are very appreciated by underground metal fans, so today we have chosen to speak of the last of them. This choice was not accidental, since in 2013, Them Frequencies released a very good record. The Great Wave-Off is their second release (after having come up with a two-song EP last year), and their genre is math/hardcore, as specified in their promotional sheet.

The recordings were made in the Next Dog studio in Bucharest, and the production was done by the band members and Marius Costache, so it’s easy to understand that we are dealing with an album with impeccable sound. I have never quite understood what mathcore is about, since math has never been one of my strengths, but in my vision the eight songs appear as very technical metalcore, influenced by bands such as Cancer Bats, Killswitch Engage, Mastodon, or The Fall of Troy. It’s easy to see that Dido, Eddie and Martin are very good with their instruments (accompanied by Stoimen - who handles the vocals) so we can rest assured from this side. Furthermore, on We Made You Breathe we have a guest, Mihai Andrei from Breathelast, who perfectly complements Stoimen, with a result that is similar to the super-song Rise Inside (Killswitch Engage)... at least somewhere in my subconscious.

Them Frequencies is a band with a bright future ahead of it, especially since they will be soon starting a tour in South-eastern Europe with Sofy Major. They will be visiting Bulgaria, Greece, Hungary, Turkey, Macedonia, Serbia, Bosnia, and also Romania - with two shows (in Bucharest and Cluj). If you like math/metalcore, or underground music in general, you can’t miss such a show. If Them Frequencies are not your cup of tea, I have an alternative proposition for you (also from Bulgaria) that you are 100% sure to enjoy: Azis.
