Ian Gillan (DEEP PURPLE): an enigmatic phrase

Ian Gillan (DEEP PURPLE): an enigmatic phrase
BANDS : Deep Purple

After a while, we will meet Deep Purple again, and very soon. The British band will perform at Sala Polivalentă in Bucharest, on February 20. Deep Purple are those who produced the most beautiful interfusion of hard rock, blues and jazz and now they are showing us that their creative instinct is aggressively expanding, after more than 40 years of rock music. Last spring they released the Now What?! album, which fully proves the foregoing. Their frontman, Ian Gillian told us a few things about himself and the latest release.

Metalfan: Hello! We salute you and we are grateful for having this talk. How is your day? Which thought occurred in your mind when you woke up?
Ian Gillan: Thank you for that. It’s pissing down with rain and my studio is leaking, but apart from that everything is tickety boo. I don’t normally have cohesive thoughts when I wake up, just a bit of stretching and smiling.

Metalfan:  And Now What?! Let’s talk a bit about your latest release, the “Now What?!” full length. How much irony can emerge from the album title?
Ian Gillan: Well, it’s an enigmatic phrase, so you can make of it what you will. Does that make sense? I thought not!

Metalfan: What kind of reactions did you notice regarding this release? How about the gigs? How did you feel the audience?

Ian Gillan: The response to Now What?! has been brilliant and the material is more than usually compatible with the better known stuff.

Metalfan: Which was the main factor that brought the idea of making the Vincent Price song? By the way, its musical structure built a fantastic “vampyrian” hymn.
Ian Gillan: Vincent Price was the working title as the original track sounded to us like the soundtrack for a horror movie. The lyrics were merely a list of elements we thought a producer/director of such a film would have to include in the scenario.

Metalfan: Did any of you contribute to the video script for Vincent Price?
Ian Gillan: I don’t think so; the idea came from the guys at the label, instigated by Max Vaccarro who has been a driving force in the whole process.

Metalfan: When thinking at composing “Perfect Strangers,” which is the first memory that comes into your mind?
Ian Gillan: Blimey, I can’t remember that. The title was certainly apt as we tried to get used to each other again after the few years apart.

Metalfan: Can you compare the dreams that you had in the 80’s with the dreams of today?
Ian Gillan: Well, this might seem weird but I never did have any dreams or ambitions other than to be in a hard rocking band. And of course to be performing as much as possible, while the records were essential to provide fresh material. My dreams and musings tend not to be about music.

Metalfan: Thank you so much for your time. We want you to have a great time in Bucharest at the show in February. In the end, feel free to write anything you want to share right now.
Ian Gillan: It’s my pleasure, looking forward to seeing you all in February; don’t forget to bring your energy and be prepared to leave it all on the floor of the venue.
