In a press release from February 2013, RoadkillSoda was referred to as "the only stoner metal band in Romania", a claim that I cannot agree with. Why? Well, I think of at least one band from Timisoara called Nomega, who released the EP Deimos in 2012, produced by Sol Faur (Dordeduh, Sunset in the 12th House, ex-Negura Bunget). So, what are these boys about? Style-wise they fall under the same area. This did not necessary have much to do with this record, but I felt this clarification needed to be made.
Less than two years after the release of A Fucked Up Trip Gone Bad, RoadkillSoda comes back with a new studio album. Oven Sun is the title of the new record; a strong effort showing that the band is becoming more and more substantial. After their breakup with singer Mihnea Blidariu (Luna Amara), I could have hardly imagined that the energetic and guttural Sebastian Stancu from Spiritual Ravishment could become the new vocal of RoadkillSoda, and even less that he could sing so differently, melodically, harmoniously and with a lot of personality. I knew that Sebastian’s favourite bands included Alice In Chains, and I must admit that I thought at some point that he might try such an approach. It seems someone has heard my thought and it happened. And not only did it happen, but it’s going damn well!
RoadkillSoda’s music is a fortunate mix of influences from Kyuss, Alice In Chains and Queens of the Stone Age. There is of course a lot of other interesting stuff in there, other influences not necessarily from the stoner scene, received intentionally or subconsciously by the musicians. Still, no matter what caused their gears to start spinning, what’s important is that it happens and the dream called RoadkillSoda came true and has a life of its own. Oven Sun is a solid record, but not as dynamic as the band could make it. There are times when more energy would have been welcome. Of course, this is not necessarily such a bad thing, since we are speaking of a stoner rock band and not a thrash/speed metal one.
In conclusion, all I can say is that RoadkillSoda makes sense, has a purpose and bright future ahead. It would be a pity if they remained local and not become an important name for scenes outside Romania. It would be a pity if songs such as Drove Away, The Blame Is Mine or Can't Take Control were not heard on a bigger stage. The road is theirs, they only need enough gas to go through with it.
