In my opinion, this is the perfect thrash metal album, the album that defines this genre. The band was initially called Legacy, but because there was already a band with the same name, the band thought about a name for a few months. When Billy Milano (S.O.D., M.O.D.) called the owner of Megaforce Records, Jon Zazula, and suggested just: Testament! and then put down the phone, the classic metallized Testament logo, with the capital T and A was born, and the album was baptized The Legacy as a throwback to the first period/the roots of the band.
It contains brutal riffs, à la Slayer and Dark Angel, melodic ones, à la Metal Church and Metallica and enviable soloing provided by the extraordinary Alex Skolnick in the vein of Cacophony or Yngwie Malmsteen. As for Chuck Billy’s voice, (who replaced their first vocal Steve „Zetro” Souza, who left Testament to replace Paul Baloff in Exodus), what can I say? This album has instantly propelled him among the best metal vocals. Here he offers us both his unmistakable singing voice, terrifying growls and, something that places The Legacy above all other Testament albums, are the wonderful falsettos screamed by Chuck.
If you’re not familiar with thrash metal my advice is to start not with any album from Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax or Slayer, but with this one, because it has everything it needs to turn thrash metal into your new way of life! Best song? All of them.
