Varg Vikernes is one of the most fascinating and controversial figures of the metal scene, and especially of the Norwegian black metal scene. First of all, I must say that the musical direction of Umskiptar is quite different from the one on Fallen (2011). It is still Varg, it is still black metal, but things are a bit different. On Umskiptar, Varg proposes a music that leans more towards neo-folk and viking. No, it’s not Ensiferum, Turisas, Finntroll or who know what else you might find in the new metal wave. Don’t worry, it’s still Burzum, still old school in body and mind, but a bit mellowed out and more avantgarde-ish. Production is signed by Pytten, or, by his real name Eirik Hundvin, known for records such as Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas (1994), Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse (1994) and Immortal - Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism (1992), to name but a few of the materials he has left his mark on.
If I were to describe Umskiptar in just a few words, the first thing would be Current '93 + a pinch of the new Bathory and lot of... Burzum! How come? Have you heard Det som engang var (1993)? How about Filosofem (1996)? I guess you liked them, and if you haven’t, t’ere's still time. But what’s the connection? Well, repetitive riffs, rooted in a frigid atmosphere supported by Varg’s generally clear vocal parts. Still the result is aggressive in execution; Umskiptar may require more patience from old Burzum fans (probably mad at the neo folk). But, in the end, this patience will be rewarded, and you will find in Umskiptar one of the most interesting materials Varg has offered so far. The most solid songs on the record must be Joln, Alfadanz, Valgaldr and Gullaldr. The others aren’t bad, but if at the moment you don’t have the patience to listen to the whole material, the above songs are a must. I will end by saying that Umskiptar is a fascinating journey, guided and rewarded by patience.
