DEMONICAL: a completely different path
BANDS : Demonical

Martin Schulman, bass guitarist of the swedish group Demonical, was kind enough to answer a set of questions for Metalfan regarding the band concerts in Romania. Martin has also offered a few details about the latest studio album of the band - Death Infernal, about their collaboration with Costin Chioreanu of Twilight13media, but had nothig to say about football and a certain match of the1994 World Cup. More detalils from Martin Schulman in the following lines:

Metalfan: Hello and welcome to Metalfan! As this is your first interview for our webzine, it would be nice if you could tell us more things regarding Demonical, let's say a short biography of the band, highlighting the most important aspects of your career so far.

Martin Schulman: Demonical started out in April 2006 right after our former band, Centinex, split up. I think everyone should visit one of our websites for a more detailed biography. It’s hard to pick out any favorite moment as basically every new release or tour has been a highlight, a step towards domination.

Metalfan: Not to long ago you have released a new studio album, called Death Infernal. What could you tell us regarding the story behind the album? When have you start writing songs for it?

Martin Schulman: The album came out in april this year so it’s a while ago… Anyway, we wrote and recorded the album during last year, we were in the studio on and off from September to December. Death Infernal is a great album that represent the band in the most superior way, a total balst of Swedish death metal darkness.

Metalfan: Do you choose the title of an album first and then compose the songs? You need a clear concept before you start working or it is more like: "Let's see what happens..."?
Martin Schulman: No, we do not really work like that… Music can be written even before we have any title but with lyrics it’s a different story, there we need a track-title before we can start with the actual lyrics.

Metalfan: Speaking of Death Infernal, could you describe in a few words each song from the album?
Martin Schulman: Uhh that’s hard… I think it’s better to leave it up to the listener. But I can say that if you like old-schoold Swedish death metal you will fucking love the album!!

Metalfan: You have worked with Costin Chioreanu of Twilight13media for the graphic layout of this album. How did you meet him?

Martin Schulman: I have been in contact with Costin for many years, since 2005 or something. It all started when he did the artwork & layout for the last Centinex album, after that he has done almost all layout works for Demonical and several other bands I/we have been involved in. Costin is an amazing artist who always understands my vision and goal and he is super-easy to work with a delivers everything fast and correct.

Metalfan: You have also worked with Costin for the video of the song Ravenous. What are the reactions so far?
Martin Schulman: Yes that’s right, Costin and his friend [Valeriu Catalineanu] came to for a weekend in April and we filmed the video in and around the city.
In my opinion the video looks really professional and that’s wjhat the comments have said as well, no one has complained. We hope to work with Costin again on future video-projects.

Metalfan: You will play three shows here in Romania (Cluj-Napoca, Bucharest and Sibiu) this November. What should expect from this two shows the people who will come to see you?
Martin Schulman: It will be really great to FINALLY play in Romania, we have been on the way many times but always been stopped by something but this time it will happen. We have a great touring package so those coming to the shows will get a killer dose of death metal and a good drinking session.

Metalfan: Is there a particular thing which makes Demonical different on stage compared to other bands?
Martin Schulman: We are better! Haha!!!

Metalfan: Do you like football? Do you remember the football match between Sweden and Romania from World Cup '94?
Martin Schulman: Nah I don’t really follow football… I remember the World Cup from 1994 but sorry, don’t remember that game.

Metalfan: How is Romania seen from Sweden?
Martin Schulman: I don’t know really... To be honest I don’t think that many Swedes know so much about Romania. Of course they know that there is such country and maybe that the capital is Bucharest but I don’t think they know so much more. Maybe some know Transylvania and the story about Dracula…  So as they don’t know so much about the country they can’t really have any opinion.

Metalfan: Do you see Demonical as a supergroup?
Martin Schulman: No I don’t see us as such.

Metalfan: What do you think about supergroups? Is it art, money chase or just the human mind?
Martin Schulman: I don’t know really, but quite often I get the feeling it’s only money chase…. Musically 90% of the so called supergroups suck big time!

Metalfan: Do you see Demonical as a continuation of Centinex?
Martin Schulman: No it’s a different band with a totally different goal, mission and path. The only connection is that a few of the members played in both bands.

Metalfan: In the end I propose you a short quizz. Could you tell us few words about the following:

Metalfan: Last book you’ve read?
Martin Schulman: The Dirt (the book about Motley Crue).

Metalfan: The book that changed your life?
Martin Schulman: None.

Metalfan: Last movie seen?
Martin Schulman: Smala Sussie (Swedish movie)

Metalfan: Favorite movie?
Martin Schulman: There are too many to mention….

Metalfan: Your favorite drink?
Martin Schulman: White-Russian.

Metalfan: The most important metal album four you as a fan of the genre?

Martin Schulman: ScorpionsWorld Wide Live. On vinyl of course!
