Soundcheck 5 with Peter Huss (SHINING)

Soundcheck 5 with Peter Huss (SHINING)
BANDS : Shining (Swe)

Peter Huss, the guitarist of the infamous swedish group Shining, was kind enough to speak exclusively for Metalfan Romania about albums that have marked him both as man and as a musician.Moving from Europe to Megadeth and from Guns N 'Roses to Yngwie Malmsteen and Gary Moore, Peter has demonstrated that despite extreme metal as he performs with Niklas Kvarforth and the other colleagues from Shining he keeps a true love for classic sounds of the genre. Also, Peter did not hesitate and spoke about the disc VII: Född Förlorare (2011), the album that he consideres most important of his career so far.

Europe - Wings of Tomorrow (1984)

As a kid I grew up with Europe and the huge success they had with The Final Countdown. But this is the album that really blew me away. The opening track Stormwind really got me hooked from the start. The way John Norum played the main riff in Scream of Anger, using the wah wah pedal, was just totally unique to me. This vinyl was on every day. One day I dropped my record and a big chunk of the instrumental track Aphasia got lost. This sucked and I was really sad about it (nowadays I have it on CD). On the last track, Dance the Night Away just before the last chorus, I heard a guitar lick, which I later named "the cube", for the first time. I thought it sounded like a metallic cube rolling down a metal staircase. Nowadays I do that lick all the time! So, a great album by a bunch of young and hungry guys from Sweden.

Megadeth - Countdown to Extinction (1992)

The first song I ever heard from this album was Symphony of Destruction. Need I say more!? This was actually the first album I ever heard with Megadeth!! From then on I bought everything! Two of my most proud possession were a Symphony of Destruction poster and a Countdown to Extinction T-shirt which I bought in London in 1993. I still have´em! I can´t find one thing about this album that isn't good. And Marty Friedman! Man, what a guitarist! My favourite album probably is Rust in Peace but the impact Countdown to Extinction had on me was just enormous. Favourite song on the album? Probably Architecture of Aggression.

Guns N´Roses - Use Your Illusion I & II (1991)

Ok, this is not one album, but I can´t mention one without the other. This is just pure genius! The songs, the production, the performance. All the little details! And the little sticker on the case that said: "This album contains language which some listeners may find objectionable. They can F?!* OFF and buy something from the New Age section!" That was proof that this really was cool! And for a young kid like me that was it. Until this day when I listen to these albums it strikes me that I doubt I will ever hear anything this good again.

Yngwie Malmsteen - Marching Out (1985)

This guy has had a huge impact on me as a guitarist. A lot of people thinks that he just plays fast. And well, he does play a lot of fast stuff. But it's his tonal qualities that really impress me. And the stuff he did when he was 15 is far better than 99% of any other guitarists work will ever be. On this album he really lets everything out. Emotional playing. Technical playing. And he is still the young and hungry guy he was at the beginning. I have jammed along to this album so many times and I still do sometimes. This album also features Jeff Scott Soto, one of my absolute favourite singers. The guitar playing on the title track is as good as it gets!

Gary Moore - Still Got the Blues (1990)
My mum bought this LP when it came out. I "borrowed" it from her the very same moment and I still have it. This really opened me up to the bluesier style I like so much. And even though I started to look at his earlier stuff after this, this is the album that made me love his playing. I jammed so much to this album it´s hard to believe actually. And again I still do. Favourite songs? Moving On and Midnight Blues I think. But they are all good to play along to. Gary Moore passed away to early but his impact on me as a guitarist and songwriter will always be there. He is truly one of the greatest!

Metalfan: Of the albums that you played on, what's the one you feel most proud of?

I really like the way the latest Shining album (VII - Född Förlorare) came out. When it comes to my playing I´m most proud of my solo on Tillsammans Är Vi Allt. I improvised it in the studio and added the harmonies afterwards. For me this solo is very honest and comes straight from the heart.
