The third release of the Danish band The Psyke Project is at least as heterogeneous as the previous ones; in fact, style differences are even more obvious from one track to the next. Dark and sometimes violent, the music of Apnea cannot be brought under any genre umbrella, with songs written in totally different manners, from doom to black, from metalcore to industrial. Sometimes psychedelic, sometimes heavy, with moments of progressive and orchestrations that seem chaotic. I can’t help comparing this album with the band’s previous release, Daikini, the one that got my attention to them. As songwriting goes, it is along the same lines, but a bit less brutal and more polished. Less extreme metalcore, more doom, and more atmospheric. Perhaps even more digestible than Daikini, Apnea isn’t such an easy album to listen to, because these guys aren’t afraid to produce sounds that seem a little out of place in the song and to experiment with orchestrations that may seem tiresome and sometimes unclear. I don’t know whether Tue Madsen is to blame for this or this is exactly the idea, probably the latter, because this mix brings its contribution in creating the atmosphere of the album. Apnea is a particular musical experience, courageous, intense, nonconformist and hard to label. It is also hard to anticipate how many times you will have the patience to listen to this album, but once it's worth trying.
