You must be familiar with names such as Dødheimsgard and Code, you may have heard of Kvohst, i.e. Mat McNerny, an Englishman that decided to move to the frozen Finland. If I were to look at the number of views for this record or the number of votes, I would realize that either Hexvessel is underappreciated, or it is unknown to the Romanian public.
Hexvessel was created in 2009 in Tampere, Finland, from Mat McNerny’s desire to create a psychedelic folk music with progressive rock elements from the 70s, a tribute to British bands of this genre and not only, but also a tribute to nature, spirit, to man’s melding with the energies of the universe.
No Holier Temple is the band’s second studio album, released in the autumn of 2012 by the record company Svart Records. On this material Hexvessel keeps the line of the first material, but in general things are much better. The bands seems much more compact and manages to offer mid-tempo psychedelic music reminiscent of early Pink Floyd, old October Falls, but also Porcupine Tree (Mat McNerny’s vocals). This record is diverse, sombre and full of substance.
The band’s best moments that spearhead this album are Woods to Conjure, A Letter in Birch Bark, His Portal Tomb, Sacred Marriage and Your Head is Reeling. Practically these songs prove the band’s versatility, keeping the same state, the same feeling of communion with nature. I will end by saying that if you like psychedelic, neofolk, doom and progressive rock sounds, this album is not to be missed. An unforgettable journey, where the feeling of freedom given by Mat McNerny & co. makes the difference.
