Globalization makes miracles, disasters, and sometimes good jokes. In the press release about Haiduk, we are told that Luka Milojica’s project originates in the frozen woods of Canada. This may be true in location, but not in spirit. If our Metalfan editors sought their fortunes in faraway lands, it would be rather laughable – for the few who know us – to write: a project by Ovidiu “Hellhammer” Toma, coming from the urban jungle of Hong Kong; a project by Alexandru “Fantotzii” Vlasceanu, arising from the bush in the Sidney region; or the project by Sorin “Klawz” Anchidin, from... No, wait, project by Sorin Anchidin could come from anywhere.
Getting over this, I found Luka (from the woods, so no unnecessary politeness) very cool. A man of his physique, instead of playing hockey for the Calgary Flames or deal drugs brought from Eastern Europe, chooses to play music... No, wait, he could import... Well, he chooses to do a demo alone and then an album, so he can only inspire respect.
I’ve seen many descriptions on the net, but the most inspired – NOT mine, but I adhere to it – is a black metal musician who has listened to some Vader and loved it. Just 32 minutes of thrash/death and (less) black will keep you on your toes and would make you break furniture in any room that is unfortunate enough to have things that are not nailed down.
Don’t imagine that we are dealing with an epiphany. Ten short songs (just two over four minutes), loaded with adrenaline, carpet bombing kick drum and every explosive you can imagine in noise. The guitar is very loud, the vocals, not as much, the rhythm section is... half programmed. But drums are not as artificial as, say Ministry, for instance.
But, for one man, deep in the Canadian woods (people who write press releases don’t know we have internet or maybe we’ve even been there?), the effort is more than commendable. A 7.5 you can deduct half a point, but I hope it increases the temperature in Luka Milojica’s studio by at least a millionth of a degree.
