While they took their first steps in 2004, I only heard about Circa Survive about 4 months ago, when Serban – none other than the bass player of White Walls, posted one of their songs on Facebook. In a first phase one might be tempted to believe that Anthony Green, with his voice, is the mirror of the band, but once you get into the music of Circa Survive you realize that this is not the case, his colleagues have a lot to say. I could compare this feeling to a first date, you are attracted to the looks, and when you get to know the person better you are attracted by other things. This is exactly what happens with this band, at first you get attracted by Anthony’s wonderful voice, and then, once immersed in their music, you find out amazing things you would have never suspected in this life. In both cases, if we hadn’t had that first impression, we might not have gotten to see the other qualities. In other words, if the band didn’t have this voice, I don’t think I would have given it the time of the day.
Practically, these people make a sort of music that forces you to pay a lot of attention in order to understand. Circa Survive’s style is a mixture of progressive rock, indie, post hardcore, or alternative. So, genres that are a bit unusual for our site (except of course progressive). Nevertheless, it seems that this mixture proposed by Circa Survive is called Crossover Prog, according to the people at ProgArchives.com.
So, Violent Waves is no exception from the rule, because we can find in it all the above elements. The lyrics and the manner in which Anthony sings them are rather melancholic, but this is not detrimental. On the contrary, they give a deep state of relaxation and soul peace. This is the kind of album that, once you understand it, you find it hard to tear yourself from it, especially since you start to discover new things every time you hear it. About the final score, personally I would have given it a 9 without any remorse, but since there’s hardly any metal in Circa Survive I deducted one point. Anyway, what’s happening in their music is often heard in certain metal genres. So, if Violent Waves manages to catch your attention in the slightest bit, you shouldn’t miss their previous three endeavours, because they are particularly good. I would wholeheartedly recommend their previous record, Blue Sky Noise (2010), as it is the Americans’ best product by far.
