This year, in February, I have had the honour to have a brief chat with three of the four members of the young Italian band Void of Sleep, Burdo (vocals, guitar), Gale (guitar, vocals) and Allo (drums). For those of you who have overlooked that material, I will try to make a short presentation of the band. Void of Sleep is a small band from Ravenna, Italy, created in 2010. Their self-produced EP Giants and Killers was released in 2011. One year later, Emiliano, the man behind the record label Aural Music, discovered Void of Sleep and this is how the band got into the limelight.
This record, Tales Between Reality and Madness, is the band’s first full length studio album. While on the EP Giants and Killers the band members’ performance left some room for improvement, with this first album things have changed for the better. The band does the same stoner/sludge metal with many parts of beautiful progressive metal, and it offers a bit more. Sounds like an Italian band? No way! I’d rather say that the band’s music is closer to Mastodon and Opeth with little Alice in Chains inserts. This is not a tribute band, or a band that shamelessly copies large bands. No, it definitely is not. We have a band that does not bore, overflows enthusiasm and tries to offer a bit of originality (which is rather hard to get). Without marginalizing the band’s other songs, I must say that the absolute peak of this record is Lost in the Void. A song of 8 minutes and a half offering meaty and healthy stoner rock riffs, progressive episodes that grow organically, and a warm and melodic vocal timbre, a really cool combination that will win the listener over from the first listen. Songs like Blood on my Hands, The Great Escape of the Giant Stone Man or Mirror Soul Sickness, but also Sons of Nothing are nothing to sneer at. I will end by saying that if you like progressive rock sound, and the “cleaner” variety of stoner/sludge, you will find a pleasant surprise in Void of Sleep.
